U.S., N. Korea meet on missiles; Japan, S. Korea press on defenses

Article Abstract:

North Korea continues to resist the US' demand for the cessation of its weapons production and exportation activities. In the third round of talks held on Oct 1, 1998, the US promised to loosen its economic sanctions provided it abandons arms production controlled by the Missile Technology Control Regime. However, North Korea contends that no condition is needed for the lifting of economic sanctions since it has been provided for under the 1994 Agreed Framework. Japan and South Korea are poised to increase their defenses in response to North Korea's missile test on Aug 31, 1998.
