US says N Korea site nuclear free; Perry visits Pyongyang

Article Abstract:

An inspection team from the US has visited a site in North Korea and has determined that it is free of nuclear weapons facilities. There has been a meeting between the US presidential envoy, William Perry, and officials from North Korea to assess the possibility of a change in US-N Korean realtions. Perry has stated that he has gains new insights from these valuable discussions. There may be obstacles to a major shift in US policy since there have been a number of disagrements between the two countries.

North Korea warns on nuclear freeze, halts DOE cleanup at Yonbyon

Article Abstract:

North Korea has suspended US cleanup activities at the Yongbyon nuclear waste site and threatened to reopen other frozen nuclear facilities due to the US' failure to comply with the provisions of the 1994 US-North Korean Agreed Framework. North Korea accused the US of failing to ease economic sanctions and delaying light-water reactor construction and heavy fuel oil shipments. However, the State Dept has guaranteed that the US would meet its obligations under the agreement.

North Korea freezes missile tests; U.S. lifts sanctions; Perry report released

Article Abstract:

The United States and North Korea strengthened bilateral ties with the announcement by President Clinton of the suspension of sanctions, and Pyongyang's declaration that North Korea will not launch a missile. William Perry's report on US policy toward North Korea suggested that the US and its allies reduce pressures on North Korea in stages and in a reciprocal fashion.
