Ukraine: a land in between

Article Abstract:

Among the most recent political developments in Ukraine is the election of a new parliament. The left-leaning groups garnered a total of 213 seats in the unicameral Verkhovna Rada or Supreme Council which consists of 450 representatives. Ukraine is in the process of rebuilding itself and moving towards democracy after the dissolution of the former Soviet Union. The elections conducted since the separation have generally been fair and peaceful as is the transfer of power from Leonid Kravchuk to Leonid Kuchma in the 1994 presidential runoff elections.

Toward consolidated democracies

Article Abstract:

A consolidated democracy is an interactive system comprising the interrelated areas of an independent and autonomous civil, political and economic society, rule of law, and a state bureaucracy. However, current ethnic issues and economic disillusionment are increasingly contributing to disenchantment with democratic governance. Area specific problems peculiar to multinational states, such as cultural and political identities, must be emphasized along with the quality of life wrought by economic re-structuring to facilitate democratic consolidation.
