Voluntary associations, professional organisations and the environmental movement in the United States

Article Abstract:

Local voluntary associations and national professional environmental organizations both play a role in shaping the overall nature of the environmental movement in the US. Research based on newspaper abstracts over a 15-year period indicates that the unconventional actions of voluntary groups tend to take place at least a year before similar actions by professional organizations. Voluntary organizations play an important role in making local communities aware of significant issues and in sensitizing the wider public to developing problems.

Power, politics and environmental movements in the Third World

Article Abstract:

Environmental groups in the Third World generally seek to encourage local people to protect the local environment against outside interests. These groups are mainly rurally-based, tend to have wide socio-economic and political concerns and are dominated by women. Environment-oriented protests often form elements of wider protests against governments and their policies. There are a number of factors that make environmental campaigns more likely to succeed, including the presence of democratic and legal routes to pursue environmental aims.
