Women redrawing the map: the world after the Beijing and Cairo Conferences

Article Abstract:

The fourth UN World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, showed that social changes can be effected through discipline, collaboration, and shared purpose. The Conference made it clear that equality of gender is essential. It demanded the eradication of discrimination, violence, and coercion from women's lives. The conference also showed that the population and development policies adopted at the Cairo, Egypt, International Conference on Population and Development reflect global visions.

The Beijing conference: a South African perspective

Article Abstract:

A qualitative analysis of the deliberations of the Fourth World Conference on Women shows that it's impact on women's empowerment in Africa and around the world was both negative and positive. Substantive equality is far from being achieved. In developing countries, the rise in radical nationalism and religious fundamentalism hinders the movement of women towards socio-economic and political equality.

Article Abstract:

The participation of Russian women in the Fourth UN Conference on Women shows that women's voices are increasingly being heard in Russia. Such participation make women's conferences more meaningful by providing diversity in experiences, actions, and ideas. Processes begun at the conference need the Russian government's political will and economic resources for their growth.
