Yemen's uneasy elections

Article Abstract:

Yemeni elections, planned for Apr 27, 1997, will probably not result in any change to the military regime of Ali Abdullah Salih, but will give expression to Yemen's political diversity. The country's many problems result mainly from the reunification of North and South Yemen in 1990. Each regime was allowed to maintain a great deal of regional control. Civil war followed in Apr 1994. Yemen's current problems include a merely modest oil economy, in which much of the revenue goes to the political elites, low social expenditures by the state, and strained relations with Eritrea and Saudi Arabia.

The empires strike back? Russia, Iran and the new republics

Article Abstract:

The Soviet Union's reinvention as the Commonwealth of Independent States has focused Western attention on the Baltic area while greater uncertainty revolves around Transcaucasia and Central Asia. There the Russian position is weakening as it strives to maintain influence and military security, and Iran is gaining credibility as a broker of stability. Oil and gas resources underlie most significant issues there, with the disputed nature of the Caspian Sea at the center.

A chance for Russia

Article Abstract:

Cooperation with NATO could help to promote Russian integration with Europe. Russian involvement was highly significant in peacekeeping operations in Bosnia. Furthermore, Russia's importance to the West is more apparent in relation to security and defense, while integration with European and global markets will probably take longer. Russia has the military potential to contribute to European security through NATO, which would significantly affect European relations.
