A cross-linguistic examination of assimilation context effects

Article Abstract:

A study to determine the role of experience with a specific language or assimilation phenomenon in shaping the phonological processes that allow listeners to process assimilated speech by experimenting on native and non-speakers of Hungarian and Korean in assimilated and non-assimilated control contexts is conducted. Results conclude that progressive assimilation context effects are produced by mechanisms that do not require familiarity with a specific assimilation process but rely on perceptual mechanisms.
