A mother's complaints of overeating by her 25-month-old daughter: a proposal of anorexia nervosa by proxy

Article Abstract:

A mother's complaints of overeating by her 25-month-old daughter were interpreted as a case of anorexia by proxy because of the mother's past condition, which was similar to anorexia nervosa. The child exhibited symptoms of vomiting and abdominal distension. However, the patient actually had low body weight, and mother's excessive worry and control over diet lead to a state of starvation. Mother's efforts to prevent the patient's overeating can be a projection of mother's own characteristics of anorexia nervosa on to the child. The case and the treatment process are discussed.
