Charcot's comments on the therapeutic role of isolation in the treatment of anorexia nervosa

Article Abstract:

Jean-Martin Charcot, who was an influential doctor and teacher during the late 19th century in France, advocated the isolation of people suffering from anorexia nervosa. Charcot expounded on the merits of the technique as a means of morally and physically cleansing the patient of all outside undesirable influences. He regarded the disorder as a form of hysteria. Contrary to many of his colleagues beliefs, Charcot considered visits of relatives as a deterrent to effective treatment.
