Adolescents' perceptions of communication with parents relative to specific aspects of relationships with parents and personal development

Article Abstract:

Teenagers' ideas about communication with parents were studied with respect to measures of family satisfaction, teenage decision-making and arguments with parents. Findings were in agreement with the psychometric qualities of the Parent-Adolescent Communications Scale and indicate that good family communication is related to family satisfaction and to the absence of altercations between parents and children. Results also indicated a positive connection between family communication and self-esteem and the coping mechanisms used by teenagers.
