An MMPI-2 infrequent response scale for use with psychopathological populations: the Infrequency-Psychology Scale, F(p)

Article Abstract:

Butcher et al. revised the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) by introducing some changes to its original validity and clinical scales and by adding a new scale intended to detect infrequent responding among psychopathological populations. The construct validity of this Infrequency-Psychopathology Scale is examined by testing a set of propositions based on an analysis of explanations for the high Infrequency and Infrequency-Back scores in inpatient settings. The results are discussed.

Characteristics of the MMPI-2 F(p) scale as a function of diagnosis in an inpatient sample of veterans

Article Abstract:

The characteristics of the Frequency psychopathology, F(p), which was designed for the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) for identifying invalid profiles in psychiatric populations, are evaluated. The F(p) was used to determine high F and F-back elevations in the MMPI-2 profiles of five groups of 308 male psychiatric inpatients at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Results indicate that the F(p) is a useful adjunct to F and F-back as an infrequency scale.

The ability of Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 validity scales to detect fake-bad responses in psychiatric inpatients

Article Abstract:

The validity of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 was tested in a sample of inpatients from the Minneapolis Veteran Affairs Medical Center under honest and fake-bad scripted conditions to determine the effectiveness of the Infrequency-Psychopathology Scale, F(p). Findings supported the use of F(p) in the detection of malingering in psychiatric patients and its superiority in distinguishing between psychiatric inpatients responding honestly and attempting to fake bad.
