Eating disorders and panic: four cases of pathological coping

Article Abstract:

Four cases are presented which illustrate a cyclical pattern in which stressful events give rise to somatic sensation of anxiety. Eating-disordered patients try to deal with the anxiety by binging which, in turn, engenders fears of fatness, exacerbate the panic disorder and eventually results in purging and/or subsequent dieting. Implications for the diagnosis and treatment of people suffering from both panic and eating disorders are discussed.
