An examination of adolescent risk-taking using a story completion task

Article Abstract:

Researchers examined adolescent risk-taking. They asked 570 adolescents to complete stories outlining situations which presented a risk to the story character. They found that nearly all the adolescents accepted the negative risks in their story endings, but only two-thirds accepted the positive risks. They also found that many more adolescents wrote about short-term consequences than long-term consequences. The adolescents' acceptance of short-term negative consequences of risky behaviour, together with their disregard for long-term consequences, corresponds with adolescent invulnerability models.

Adolescent body image dissatisfaction: relationships with self-esteem, anxiety, and depression controlling for body mass

Article Abstract:

A sample of 268 females and 248 males aged 12 to 18 from six high schools in Melbourne, Australia, participated in a study which examined the relationship of Perceived Body Image Dissatisfaction (PBID) with anxiety, depression and self-esteem. Several instruments such as The Eating Disorder Inventory, which measures symptoms associated with anorexia and bulimia, and Reynolds Adolescent Depression, which identifies depression in adolescents, were administered to the subjects. Results showed that PBID is caused by several factors, including actual body mass, gender and self-esteem.
