Peer relations in adolescence: effects of parenting and adolescents' self-concept

Article Abstract:

The effects of parent-adolescent relationship and the adolescents' self-concept to peer relations were determined in a study comprising 508 families, with adolescents of ages 12-18 years old, as respondents. Self-concept was measured using the Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale and Harter's Perceived Competence Scale for Adolescents. Results demonstrate that self-concept acts in mediating the relationship of the style of maternal child-rearing and peer involvement. Results also suggest that the quality of parenting greatly influence the quality of the adolescents' peer relations.

The effects of work and relational mental incongruity on identity formation and well-being

Article Abstract:

The principles of Tazelaar's mental incongruity theory and Marcia's identity model were merged to discover some theoretical background for progressive development trends in identity status. A representative sample of Dutch working youth, aged 16 to 24, was used to test the effect of adolescents' standards and mental incongruity on the development of their identity. Findings revealed that a higher standard in the relational or work domain was associated to more exploration and commitment in that domain and, therefore, to a more developed identity.
