An exploration of why preschoolers perform differently than do adults in audiovisual speech perception tasks

Article Abstract:

A study on why preschoolers perform differently than do adults in audiovisual speech perception task is made. The goal of the study is to examine the relationship between articulatory proficiency and perception of acoustic and visible speech, and to develop a child-friendly audiovisual speech perception task to help get children's attention and achieve optimal performance. Sixteen preschoolers are used as subjects. Results of the study show that preschoolers who made substitution errors were poorer at lip-reading than preschoolers who did not make substitution errors, proving that experience influences representation of visible speech.
