An overview of self-monitoring research in assessment and treatment

Article Abstract:

The two functions fulfilled by self-monitoring in behaviour therapy are an assessment function, within which accuracy is a key consideration, and a function as an element of treatment because of its reactive effects on the behaviours being observed. Most self-monitoring is probably intended for idiographic assessment of clinical cases, but there are also nomothetic and standardized approaches. Self-monitoring may be more convenient and economical than direct observation, but other measures may be more convenient than self-monitoring.
