Annotation: transracial family placements

Article Abstract:

A review of literature on transracial family placements of adopted children is conducted. The finding is that 70% of the transracial placements resulted in satisfactory outcomes. It is not clear whether the less than satisfactory outcomes for 30% was the consequence of ethnicity, placement choice or unrelated variables. A criticism of the body of research covered in this study is that authors did not recognize value judgments that may be fostered by their own race and social environment. A particular political and value judgments indicate that transracial placements may be difficult as a result of the racist social context.

An eight-year prospective study of older boys placed in permanent substitute families: a research note

Article Abstract:

An eight-year prospective study investigated psychosocial development of 16 boys who were placed in permanent substitute families between the ages of 5 and 9. Eighty-one percent of placements lasted until the boys reached adolescence. Fifteen percent of the boys in intact placement showed poor outcome after eight years. Poor outcomes were predicted by adversity prior to placement, but positive parenting could result in a better outcome for those with high preplacement adversity. Most of the significant changes came in the first year after placement.

Vulnerable adolescent girls: Opposite-sex relationships

Article Abstract:

A comparison was made on the opposite-sex relationships of girls, aged 15-16, at risk for difficulties in early adult partnerships with girls of the same age from an inner-city school. Based on interviews, the girls in both groups were solo-dating. The high-risk girls began solo-dating earlier than the school girls and were likely to have been pregnant, had more sexual partners and to have had a sexual relationship. They also attached a prominence and permanence to their current dating relationships.
