Anorexia nervosa in early adolescence following illness - the importance of the sick role

Article Abstract:

The development progression of anorexia nervosa is best considered using biopsychosocial, multidimensional, interactive and systemic models. Case studies of two pubertal girls follow the development of anorexia after a viral illness which may have begun the disordered body image problems because no indication of anorexia was present before the illness. Therefore, sick role behavior should be evaluated as a potential factor in the development of anorexia because complex factors including temperament, physiological vulnerability, environment and the child's personality interact to cause the psychosomatic presentation.

Preference for outdoor play during early adolescence

Article Abstract:

Sixth- and seventh-grade Caucasian children from a rural public school in northern Georgia were studied on gender-based preference for outdoor, vigorous activity for one year. Direct observation was used as well as teachers' and childrens' ratings. Results showed that sixth-grade boys preferred to play outdoors than sixth-grade girls while there were no significant differences in preference among seventh-grade boys and girls. It was explained that childrens' preference for rough outdoor activity lowers as they enter middle-school.

Article Abstract:

A study of adolescent career development and psychosocial functioning of 407 students from grades seven to 12 revealed affiliation to a given identity status group as a major influence on the nature and degree of career indecision in these adolescents. All adolescents undergo a period of doubt when they strive to form their vocational identity and require enhanced guidance in their quest of appropriate careers.
