Assessment of eating disorders: interview versus questionnaire

Article Abstract:

The Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q) is an effective means to detect symptoms of eating disorder such as bulimia nervosa in female substance abusers. The results are more accurate in cases of low levels of eating disorder behavior such as purging rather than in cases of binge eating and dietary restraint. The difference between the scores of EDE-Q and the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE), a semistructured interview, increase with progress in eating disorders. If EDE is assumed as a correct baseline, the results of EDE-Q decreases in accuracy as the disorder behavior increases.
