Russia's spurned reformer

Article Abstract:

Mikhail Gorbachev is often blamed in Russia for the problems with post- Soviet society but many analysts consider him to have been a great reformer. Gorbachev led for less than seven years. He brought about sweeping transformations in the political and economic systems and in Russia's foreign relations and domestic structure but he was only able to do so because Russian society was ripe for such a leader. His role at home now is probably to speak for democracy and he would see himself as part of a democratic coalition working with Alexander Lebed as the leader succeeding Boris Yeltsin.

Bizarre economies

Article Abstract:

The Oriental bazaar represents the ultimate free market to some economists and a cultural anomaly to others. Neither view considers all the circumstances in bazaar economics. The lack of great diversity in merchandise means that competition is based solely on price. Information on prices and raw materials are thus not reliable, which denies a foundation for a classical free market comparison. Similarities to used car sales elsewhere belie the argument for cultural uniqueness as well.

Aural and visual sources of validity in structured employment interviews

Article Abstract:

The influence of aural and visual cues during structured interviews for job applicants is analyzed. Applicants were rated based on their taped interviews that presented only the picture or sound. The correlations between aural cues, visual cues and supervisory performance show the differences between interviewees. Interviewers and supervisors also make similar conclusions about the meaning of aural and visual cues.
