Automatic semantic activation of embedded words: Is there a ohato in othato?

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine whether subsets and supersets are activated during the course of identifying non-compound words, using a methodology that avoids the matching issues. It was found that non-words that are neighbors of animal words are slower to reject in an animal categorization task compared to matched non-words without animal neighbors.

Mixing costs and mixing benefits in naming words, pictures, and sum

Article Abstract:

The generality of the homogenization pattern by examining picture naming and a sum-naming task involving addition problems are investigated. The results indicate that theoretical mechanisms like those proposed by Los (1996) and theoretical mechanisms like those proposed by Lupker et al. (1997) are both active in reaction time experiments.

The representation of polysemous words

Article Abstract:

A study of the comprehension of polysemous words shows that people comprehend the meaning of the word from context, with no accepted common meaning for the word. Polysemous words are words that are spelled the same and have similar meanings, such as paper for writing and paper, something that has been written.
