Bed-building in captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes): The importance of early rearing

Article Abstract:

Bed-building and use in 73 captive adult chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) were tested experimentally and it was found that the wild-born subjects built and used beds significantly more often than the captive-born subjects. Captive-born chimpanzees raised through the juvenile period by wild-born mothers in a social setting as opposed to those raised by human caretakers in a nursery setting, would likely have had increased opportunities to observe bed-building.

Measurement of eye-gaze in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes)

Article Abstract:

The surface eye movements of the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) are used to determine the behavioral forms of eye-gaze and their saliency as signals, to document their functional variation and address the signal value of the eyes distinct from head orientation. The analysis has provided a basis for discriminating the adaptive significance of gaze-processing abilities emphasizing on sensitivity to eye-gaze distinct from head orientation.
