Body dissatisfaction and dieting in young children

Article Abstract:

Open-ended interviews and questionnaires have been used to investigate attitudes and beliefs about dieting and the behaviours used in weight change efforts among third to sixth-grade children in a K-8 elementary school in a suburban community in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA. There was a high prevalence of body dissatisfaction among the children surveyed, with one half wishing to weigh less and more than one third wanting a thinner body shape. Only 16% reported that they had ever tried to lose weight, but other research found that having negative feelings about body image is the only significant predictor of eating problems two years later.
