Calcium channels prove to be a real headache

Article Abstract:

The mechanism involved in the occurrence of mice and human diseases in relation to calcium channels was analyzed. The voltage-dependent calcium channels which act as messengers in a wide array of cellular processes were found to bear alpha(sub IA) and beta subunits. Mis-sense mutations is these subunits lead to alterations in the properties of the calcium channels that eventually result to the development of familial hemiplegic migraine, episodic ataxia type-2 and spinocerebellar ataxia.

Low-voltage-activated (T-type) calcium channel genes identified

Article Abstract:

The molecular biology of calcium channels has enjoyed tremendous popularity in the scientific community in recent years. The most recent development is the identification of voltage-dependent calcium channel genes from the Genbank. Fragments from the Genbank have been shown to encode certain subunits of calcium channels through sequencing studies and comparison with known genetic sequences. Several members of this class of genes have been identified.

Immediate-early genes: ten years on

Article Abstract:

Cellular immediate-early genes (cIEG) are the genes that develop in serum-deprived fibroblasts when given growth hormones. Research has linked cIEG to the proto-oncogene (c-fos), eventually resulting in a surrogate neuronal-activity mapping technique based on fos expression. cIEG research also focused on basic-zipper, zinc-finger and steroid-receptor superfamilies of transcription factors.
