Case managers and boundaries

Article Abstract:

Williams and Swartz's views on treatment boundaries in case management is pertinent and well-timed. Despite the importance of the issue, this has not been discussed extensively by others. Other mental health staff in community health facilities would also benefit from treatment boundaries. Currently, only a few staff members are adequately prepared for the relationships that they are forced to deal with in community-based facilities. To address this situation, they should be trained through case illustrations that use practical, clinical examples.

Reply to "The role of psychiatrists in community mental health centers: a survey of job descriptions." (response to article by Ronald J. Diamond, Stephen M. Goldfinger, David Pollack and Michael Silver in this issue, p. 571)

Article Abstract:

Several studies show that many psychiatrists leave community mental health service because of role dissatisfaction. However, a report on job descriptions of psychiatrists in community mental health centers indicates multifaceted roles for psychiatrists. These varied roles are linked to the attainment of job satisfaction. Further studies on the level of psychiatric involvement, job retention, team functioning, patient satisfaction and patient outcomes are recommended.
