The superior mesenteric artery syndrome and acute gastric dilatation in eating disorders: a report of two cases and a review of the literature

Article Abstract:

Results on a review search on superior mesenteric artery syndrome cases revealed that majority of the cases involve asthenic patients with significant history of anorexia nervosa and a common precipitating factor of bulimic episodes, with the exception of some cases occurring in the course of resumption of normal feeding. Misdiagnosis is secondary to failure to recognize the association with the preceding factors as exemplified by the two cases presented. Anticipation should be considered in patients with eating disorders and gastric decompression is the first choice of treatment in acute cases of gastric dilatation.
