The significance of body size estimation in eating disorders: its relationship with clinical and psychological variables

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine the relationship of body size estimation (BSE) with clinical and psychological variables. A total of 45 normal women and 189 women with eating disorders performed BSE using the video distortion method on a life-size screen. Findings revealed no significant relationship between BSE and the clinical variables. The respondents' cognitive and affective responses were moderately related to self-reported body attitude. In addition, body dissatisfaction was found to be negatively correlated with the optative response, which refers to the desired body size. The construct validity of the video distortion method was bolstered by the research.
