Categorical perception of speech stimuli in children at risk for reading difficulty

Article Abstract:

Children with reading difficulty exhibit consistent deficits in phonemic awareness, or the ability to segment and blend the elements of speech and these deficits likely to play a role in difficulty in acquiring reading skills. Children in the at-risk group as a whole however did exhibit lower phonemic awareness than those in the not-at-risk group, suggesting a relative difficulty in accessing the underlying structure of spoken language.

This article examines the perceptual skills of children with reading disabilities, with and without attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. The authors, testing the children's perception of voice and tone, conclude that children with reading disabilities, regardless of whether they have ADHD, demonstrated reduced perceptual skills and have problems processing speech and nonspeech stimuli.
