Challenging times: Prevalence of psychiatric disorders and suicidal behaviors in Irish adolescents

Article Abstract:

A study determined prevalence rates of psychiatric disorders, suicidal ideation and intent, and parasuicide in a population of Irish adolescents aged 12 to 15 years in a defined geographical area of the country. Results showed 15.6% of the adolescents examined had a current psychiatric disorder and almost 20% met the criteria for a past psychiatric disorder, indicating that mental health promotion should be given priority in schools.

Age at puberty and father absence in a national probability sample

Article Abstract:

A US national probability sample examined the relations between intactness of the parental unit and pubertal timing in both men and women. An absent father at age 14 predicted an earlier age of puberty in both men and women but there was little evidence that an absent mother or the presence of a stepfather, independent of a father's absence was related to early puberty in either men or women.
