A case-control study of family composition in anorexia nervosa

Article Abstract:

The family composition of 259 females with anorexia nervosa was compared with that of 200 control subjects. Results indicate that in both the unpaired univariate and the matched conditional logistic regression analyses, the anorexic females were both significantly later in the birth order and had significantly fewer brothers than control subjects.

Changes in the presenting features of females with anorexia nervosa in northeast Scotland, 1965-1991

Article Abstract:

There was a substantial rise in body mass index in females with anorexia nervosa presenting to secondary medical services in northeast Scotland in the period 1965 to 1991. There was no trend towards patients weighing less at the time of presentation, but there was a large drop in their heights over the study period. It appears that patients were not being diagnosed and referred at an earlier stage in their illness. However, it is possible that patients were being identified more rapidly by primary care teams.
