Coarse blobs of fine edges? Evidence that information diagnosticity changes the perception of complex visual stimuli

Article Abstract:

Experiments to find out whether visual recognition is a result of the meshing of scene categorization and visual information available at multiple scale levels. Findings show that the recognition of complex visual phenomena does not proceed from the identification of coarse blobs to fine edges or from a global to a local scale. On the contrary, there exists a flexibility in the choice of scale diagnosticity in visual perception.

Perceptual organization and attention

Article Abstract:

Six experiments on texture segregation and grouping by similarity or proximity of the visual field were performed. It was hypothesized that there is an earlier stage of processing, earlier than the preattentive stage. Results validated thehypothesis. Neither texture segregation nor similarity or proximity of the visual field were perceived under conditions of inattention.

Diagnostic colors mediate scene recognition

Article Abstract:

Research suggests colored blobs at a coarse spatial scale combine with luminance cues to create the spatial layout that determines scene recognition. Colors contribute to scene recognition when they are predictive.
