Coming of age in postmodern America

Article Abstract:

A critique of 'Beyond Black and White: New Faces and Voices in U.S. Schools' is presented. Authors Maxine Seller and Lois Weis discuss relations between blacks and whites within classrooms and communities across the US. The book opens new avenues for studying developmental patterns of large sections of the American population. It can also be described as a follow up to Margaret Mead's study into the 'limits and potentialities' of human nature in a complex world.

What's different about learning in schools as compared to family and community settings?

Article Abstract:

Some of the views of H.Mehan regarding the social and cultural processes in schools invite comment. His empirical study, which considered school learning as a historical and cultural development, furthered researchers' understanding of the influence of power and culture in everyday interactions. It also addressed cultural expectations related to language use and interactional strategies used in the classroom.
