Cultural expression of psychiatric symptoms: idioms of anger among Puerto Ricans

Article Abstract:

Idioms of aggression, assertiveness and vindictiveness are significant predictors of psychiatric symptomatology among inner city Puerto Ricans of low socioeconomic status. The idioms significantly correlate with anxiety and depressive symptomatology, indicating the importance of cultural expression in predicting mental health. Symptoms of anxiety catalyze the association between anger idioms and clinical status. Culturally based idioms of distress help in the psychological assessment and psychiatric diagnosis among Puerto Ricans.

Article Abstract:

The learning and retention after 30-min and 24-hr delays on auditory and visual selective reminding tests (SRTs) in right and left temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients and controls were examined. The performance of the left TLE group was significantly worse than controls on all 3 trials of both tests whereas the performance of the right TLE group differed from the controls on all 3 visual SRT trials and on learning for the auditory SRT.
