Death and desire, apocalypse and utopia: feminist Gestus and the utopian performative in the plays of Naomi Wallace

Article Abstract:

An exploration is made regarding how the utopian potential of gestus, its ability to make one feel, even just for a moment, part of something larger than oneselves. Understandings of gestus and its affective power is drawn not only from Brecht but also from Elin Diamond's Unmaking Mimesis (1997), and her insightful interpretation of how the strangely apt relationship between feminism and Brechtian theory.

Article Abstract:

Funnyhouse of a Negro, like all Kennedy's plays that is difficult to summarize, is a story of Negro-Sarah's struggles with substantiation, with a satisfying and complete realization of herself. The basic theatrical challenge of substantiation and the utopic sensibility behind it are dwelled and blackout as a signal location of utopia braid is proposed.

Urban Bush Women are an African-American women's dance ensemble that have repeatedly sought the utopian ensemble in their performance of African diaspora experiences. The Urban Bush Women dance Shelter, reflects the artistic director's desire to create, through collective ensemble movement, a shared history of fortitude in times of trauma.
