Can TECs turn rags to riches?

Article Abstract:

The UK faces rising unemployment and the need for job skills training. Other European countries exceed UK in job training: 55% of France's mechanical engineers are qualified compared to 33% of Britain's; and Germany trained four times as many engineers to craft level in 1987 as did Britain. Among causes for lower skill, productivity, and employee training found by researchers at the National Institute for Economic and Social Research are: insufficient training in machine repairs; unqualified personnel making inadequate decisions on technology; and difficulty in retraining due to the poor educational system. Training and Enterprise Councils are considering the following to increase the UK's competitiveness: identifying skill shortages; offering broad-based training; seeking better qualified employees; and enhancing training facilities.

Fire in the home

Article Abstract:

The number of house fires, and the number of deaths due to fires in the home, have increased in the UK during the 1990s. House fires now cause around 500 deaths per year. The majority of these fires begin in the kitchen. The handling of chip pans causes particular problems, but precautionary measures could reduce chip pan fires. Smoking-related incidents are also a major cause of house fires. The fitting of a smoke detector is a valuable exercise in home safety, but householders could also consider buying a fire blanket and a fire extinguisher.
