Eating disorder in a transgendered patient: a case report

Article Abstract:

A case study concerning a biologically-male transsexual patient highlights a possible vulnerability of this group to eating disorders. The 25-year-old patient had been bulimic since the age of 15 when he had first begun trying to live as a woman. The patient perceived the purging as necessary to achieve a feminine body shape, and had had a partial recovery from the eating disorder during a six-month period when he attempted to live as a man. Transsexual males may be particularly vulnerable to eating disorders due to the body estrangement aspects of transgenderism.

Effects of a body image curriculum for college students on improved body image

Article Abstract:

Research involving all 24 female undergraduates enrolled in a body image course at a private US west coast university has demonstrated the effectiveness of an eating disorder prevention programme based on an educational format. This intervention had a substantial impact in terms of improving body image and addressing disordered eating behaviours and attitudes. It appears that educational efforts could play a role in reducing a significant risk factor for eating disorders.
