Adolescent self-mutilation in a rural area

Article Abstract:

A study that examined the psychiatric evaluation of adolescent self-mutilators by visiting an Accident & Emergency treatment center, found that of 17 cases, one was mentally ill, and the remaining consisted of 7 females and 9 males. Only 4 subjects admitted self-mutilation though it was obvious from the nature of the injury, circumstances, related social problems, and self-mutilation history that all cases were self mutilations. Three cases were referred for psychiatric help of which only one was undergoing treatment.

The effects of small-scale, very short-term service-learning experience on college undergraduates were studied. It was analyzed that the students participating in the experience reported maintenance of their sense of the meaningfulness of college, and an increased likelihood of choosing a service-related occupation, when compared to non-participating matched counterpart.
