Eating disturbances in white and minority female dieters
Article Abstract:
Researchers surveyed eating behaviors, weight loss patterns, and attitudes towards weight and appearance, in a sample of 9,971 women dieters from different ethnic groups. The investigation provided rare data on a nonclinical group, but the fact that all the women were readers of one magazine introduced a statistical bias. Results showed no differences between ethnic groups for some variables, including self-esteem and binge eating. However, there was a greater incidence of being overweight amongst black women who were also more prone to purging, and Asian women valued exercise more as a means of controlling weight.

Body shape ideals across gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, race, and age in personal advertisements
Article Abstract:
African American and gay men give their body weight and shape in personal advertisements almost three times as often as women. Lesbians advertise attractiveness as much as heterosexual women. However, lesbians describe their body weight and shape less often than heterosexual women while the reverse is true for homosexual men. The reporting of body weight by women increases with age. The difference in body shape reporting may be due to a greater dissatisfaction among women rather than a lesser concern about body shape.
