Elmer E. Southard, M.D.: 1876-1920

Article Abstract:

Elmer E Southard was the first director of the Boston Psychopathic Hospital which was established in 1912 by the Harvard Medical School and the state of Massachusetts. The hospital was the forerunner of the Massachusetts Mental Health Center. He rose to prominence as policymaker espousing the cause for parity in the care given to the mentally ill with that for the physically ill. He developed a keen insight into the nature of mental illness which helped the patients and their families in managing the difficulties imposed on them by it.

Article Abstract:

Professor Emeritus and psychiatrist George Winokur died on Oct 12, 1996. He left behind a sterling legacy to the academic and research communities. Winokur was born on Feb 10, 1925 in Philadelphia, PA. He received a medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1947 and joined the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1971 and serve until 1995. His scientific works focused on empirical science.

Twin sisters with psychotic disorders

Article Abstract:

This article presents a case study of adult twin sisters with schizoaffective and personality disorders. The medical histories and lives of the women are compared to examine the role of the environment and genetics in the development of psychotic disorders.
