Explaining attitudes towards the euro: design of a cross-national study

Article Abstract:

The European Union has long dreamed of establishing Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) since the late 1960s. The EMU was expected to produce political, economic and social benefits for member countries. However, a survey of attitudes towards the euro showed differences over such projected gains. The perception of negative or positive benefits is conditioned by the perceived equity to concerned countries.

The Dutch people and the euro: a structural equations analysis relating national identity and economic expectations to attitude towards the euro

Article Abstract:

Best fitting results for a structural equations model showed national identity, macro and micro economic expectations as major factors that determined attitudes toward Economic and Monetary Union. The model applied cross-national data covering the Netherlands during the summer of 1997. Tests showed both direct and indirect effects of Dutch people's national identity on attitude toward the euro.
