Enactments here, enactments there, enactments everywhere: enacted symbols in a psychoanalysis

Basic reassurance revisited

Article Abstract:

Douglas H. Ingram's presentation on the central role of reassurance in psychoanalysis began with a discussion of Alexander Reid Martin's seminal 1949 paper 'Reassurance in Therapy.' Ingram expanded upon Martin's concept of basic reassurance, stressing the analyst's responsibility to reassure patients by enabling them to express their problems, make sense of their conflicts and internalize the analytic process, as well as by developing and sharing insights into their lives. Myron Glucksman, in his analysis of Ingram's remarks, reiterated the therapeutic value of reassurance within the analytic process.
