Evolving ideals of male body image as seen through action toys

Article Abstract:

Action figures on sale today are consistently much more muscular than their predecessors. Indeed, many of today's action figures have the physique of an advanced bodybuilder, and some are much more muscular than would ever be possible for a real human being. However, the extent to which these trends in toys could be a cause or effect of a developing cultural emphasis on male muscularity is uncertain. Toys have a substantial impact, but it would be wrong to assume that men in the US develop disorders of body image through boyhood exposure to muscular ideals of male physique.
