Article Abstract:

Theeyes of drone honeybees are made up of 10,000 ommatidia, each with nine visual sense cells. The dorsal area of the drone's eyes causes red light to stray dorsally, creating a photosteady state with high rhodopsin content, a conditionwhich results in high receptor sensitivity. Drones take advantage of such highly developed optical mechanisms to obtain spacial acuity and sensitivity within the ultraviolet to blue wavelength range, an ability that enables them to locate the queen during its nuptial flights.
