Family predictors of suicidal symptoms in young adolescents

Article Abstract:

Researchers investigated the mediating qualities of family functioning in the relationship between depression in the mother and suicidal tendencies in the offspring. They investigated a group of 240 children, aged around 11 years, 77% of whom had mothers with depression. They compiled a suicide index, based on a range of scales including the Children's Depression Inventory. They used this, together with an assessment of family functioning, in a year-long longitudinal study. Results indicated that perceived family functioning was a mediating factor in the relationship investigated.

Ethnic identity in aboriginal Sami adolescents: the impact of the family and the ethnic community context

Article Abstract:

Ethnic identity is strongly associated with both, the type of ethnic community and the family of Sami adolescents in northern Norway. Monoethnic adolescents at the coast with higher assimilation and integration identified themselves as Norwegian or bicultural. However, adolescents in the highland, who have greater ethnic support identified themselves as Samis. Youths with mixed parentage at the coast identify themselves as Norwegian, while those in the highland as bicultural.

Family conflict predicts blood pressure changes in African-American adolescents: a preliminary examination

Article Abstract:

Research into the links between perceived family conflict, negative life events and blood pressure in African-American adolescents is presented. It appears that the link between family conflict and mean arterial pressure is driven mainly by the link between family conflict and diastolic blood pressure.
