"Fearing our mothers": an overview of the psychoanalytic theories concerning the vagina dentata motif F547.1.1

Article Abstract:

The vagina dentata may symbolize fear of female sexuality and be a common symbol in folklore around the world. Psychoanalytic theory describes vagina dentata, or vagina with teeth, as a symbol of men's fear of castration within the vagina. It may be used to ascribe power to women or conversely to deny them power in society. Vagina dentata may symbolize an underlying tension between a male and his mother.

Structure and individuality in psychoanalytic training: the Israeli controversial discussions

Article Abstract:

The quality of psychoanalysis, its intellectual status, and its appeal depends on innovation in training and may be damaged by overly hierarchical training methods that encourage isolation and elitism. Internal debates over psychoanalytic training that occurred in the Israel Psychoanalytic Society from 1992-96 illustrate the difficulty in changing traditional psychoanalytic training.
