Flight crew collaboration to manage safety risks

Article Abstract:

A study focusing on safety hazards and the role of collaboration among flight crew members was conducted by analyzing the descriptions of safety problems experienced by 35 pilots, flight attendants, first officers, and second officers. The descriptions included how the problems were handled effectively or ineffectively. Research results suggest that constructively discussing opposing views and establishing cooperative goals are important aspects of using safety procedures effectively. Research results also indicate that the critical incident technique may be important when studying personnel management methods among flight crews.

Gene cuisine

Article Abstract:

The UK public is increasingly concerned about the safety of genetically-modified (GM) food. However, existing labelling regulations allow manufacturers to avoid mentioning that some of the ingredients in their processed food products may be GM. Additives and flavorings are not covered by GM labelling legislation, for example, and there may be ingredients which have had some contact with GM foods, or which have a GM source, which will not be labelled. An examination of 32 processed foods with no GM labelling revealed that only eight of these definitely contained no GM foods.
