Group cognitive-behavioral treatment of binge eating disorder: a comparison of therapist-led versus self-help formats

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to compare therapist-led treatment to self-help treatment methods for women suffering from binge eating disorder (BED) using group cognitive-behavioral formats. For this investigation, 61 females meeting DSM-IV criteria for BED were treated through therapist-led, partial self-help or structured self-help method. Subjects exposed to the three treatment conditions displayed reduced BED symptoms. Differences in rates of change across time were not found. These indicate that cognitive-behavioral therapy can be effectively used in a structured group self-help format.

Hedonics of binge eating in women with bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder

Article Abstract:

There could be some differences in the hedonics of binge eating behaviour in people with bulimia nervosa (BN) compared with people with binge eating disorder (BED). However, it is important to be aware that the behaviour known as binge eating varies across different patient groups and very considerably among and within any particular patient group. The more positive valence for binge eating in people with BED may make it harder for them to concentrate on this as a key problem behaviour.
