Health status of juvenile offenders. A survey of young offenders appearing before the juvenile courts

Article Abstract:

Research undertaken among juvenile offenders in Manchester, England, indicates that juvenile offenders have a low level of contact with primary health care. Of the 192 subjects who participated in this research, 41.6% admitted using either alcohol or illicit drugs. Almost one-quarter had engaged in high-risk behaviours. It was established that custodial remand is linked with a higher prevalence of homelessness or social services care, as well as with frequent hospitalization and educational difficulties.
