Household financial strategies in Sweden: an exploratory study

Article Abstract:

A study of Swedish households' financial strategies revealed varying patterns of financial assets and debts among groups of households. The strategies identified were the residual saving strategy (45.5% of respondents), the contractual saving strategy (22%), the security saving strategy (14%), the risk hedging strategy (9.3%), the prudent investing strategy (3.2%) and 'divergent' strategies (6%). These financial strategies differed in terms of time preferences, extent of financial planning and control, interest in financial matters, and other variables.

Values, beliefs and regional variations in new firm formation rates

Article Abstract:

Values, beliefs and regional variations in new firm formation rates were examined in three matched pairs of regions. Despite similarities in terms of economic-structural dimensions between the regions in each pair, one region exhibited a higher and the other a lower rate of new firm formation than indicated by models. Findings also revealed that cultural values and beliefs influenced regional new firm formation rates. However, the cultural variation was not significant enough.

A note on the failure to use negative information

Article Abstract:

Four independent samples were used to study the failure of humans to search for and use negative information. Results show a strong confirmation bias and that concreteness-as-such and the activation of an applicable decision rule improve the people's ability to search for and use negative information. There are no data available to to prove whether or not the activation of an inadequate decision rule is detrimental to performance.
