Identity as adaptation to social, cultural, and historical context

Article Abstract:

Individual identity adapts itself according to the social context. The process of identity formation involves active identity acquisition, and is not overinfluenced by self-determination. Freedom of choice prevents oppressive limitations on adolescents' options, but causes a struggle to seek a basis for choice-making. Another social change has been the realization of the existence of an inner self. A loss of traditional value bases has led to problems of identifying right and good choices. The pressure to be unique is also a major identity shaping force.

Age differences in adolescent identity exploration and commitment in urban and rural environments

Article Abstract:

The sociocultural context of the adolescents may influence their identity development by determining the opportunity structure, and result in age-related differences in adolescent identity exploration and commitment. Older youths, aged 16-17 yrs, living in Australian urban areas show higher degrees of commitment and exploration related to their future education and work than the younger ones. An age related reduction in these parameters exists among adolescents in Australian rural areas. Urban versus rural differences are absent for Finnish youths.
